February Meeting Minutes

Feb 3rd Pickleball General Meeting 8:30 AM

Deb opened the meeting and congratulated all the players from our Park who participated in the Towerpoint 2.0-2.9 Tournament. Canyon Vistas brought home approximately 10 medals from this event.

The Softball/Pickleball Cancer Fundraising competitions brought in $677 which will be used to purchase items for the Cancer Auction Baskets representing the two sports. Deb will be taking donations for the Pickleball Basket at site 625 and Rod Williams will be collecting items for the Softball basket at site 183.

The 2017-18 board members were introduced. Deb Flynn, Dale Bolt, Everett Johnson, Mike Peterson, Robin Sipe, Tom and Connie Moroni and Rod and Sylvia Williams. All board members are staying on for next year.

We received a letter from Nancy Harvey, who suffered vision problems at the courts. It turned out she had a Brain Bleed due to extremely high Blood Pressure. Prompt attention by Paramedics prevented more serious complications, but it is necessary for her to rest and recuperate for a period of time. Short visits with her friends are allowed, but she will be unable to attend functions and events for a while. A full recovery is hoped for.

In regard to the In House Fun Tournament, please give your name to Connie or Deb along with your $5 entry fee. The deadline to register is Feb 21st at Noon.

The dates for 2019’s Cal Am tournament Tryouts have been set and will be posted on the Website (https://cvsvpickleball.wordpress.com/) and Facebook Page (CV & SV Pickleball) as well as on the Whiteboard.

The Schedule for Round Robins for the 2018/19 season has been set and will be posted at the same locations.

Robin Sipe has built a Spreadsheet will all players listed on it. The hope is that players will determine their relative skill levels compared to other players in the park as scores from the various Round Robins are tabulated. This has become necessary as the number of players has grown and we need to see that players in the various Round Robins are not playing above or below their personal ability. It has been proposed that we take the two top and bottom players from the weekly Round Robins and consider moving them up or down a level as required. Consideration has been given to creating a ‘High A’ group for our best skilled players.

This process is intended to allow players to play the most enjoyable and skill based game they are capable of at the present time. As players improve or decline they will likely move from one group to the other. It is not intended to be a permanent label or designation for any player. We will be approaching players as the results of each R/R are tabulated, and moving players between designations if it is deemed appropriate. This is not an easy process to implement, so please be patient and cooperative as we see how this works.

It is hoped that even during Round Robins players will play the best shot available at each and every moment and not try and target weaker or less skilled players. If the best player is deep on the court and that is where the ball should be going do not target a weaker player in a better position. Exhibit Good Sportsmanship, and play the game to try and make yourself better, not just earn points. Anyone here can usually beat a team with a weak player, but you are not helping them or yourself long term. It would be better for all players if we tried harder to get and give a good all-round game at all times, and in that way we can all get better. We also want to continue to be perceived as helpful and considerate to all players. The present systems and attitudes are definitely not ‘broken’ or non-inclusive, but do need to be monitored and maintained for the enjoyment of all players.

All general Pickleball Meetings will be held on the first Saturday of the month at 8:30 AM at the courts.

A suggestion box will be considered, but in the meantime if you have suggestions please drop them off to Deb at 625 or Connie at 50. If you wish to remain anonymous, drop off a letter at their homes when they’re not looking 😊

A Pickleball Etiquette form was seen at Towerpoint that was quite informative. We will build one for ourselves and post copies of it at the Whiteboard.

The Friday Dinking game and the Monday lessons are very well attended and show how much this game has matured over the years.

Please DO NOT erase or scratch out other players names on the R/R Sign up sheets. We have had this occur a few times lately.

There is a Contact list sheet being developed. If you want to have your name on this list please approach one of the executive.

John Zachary cleans and sweeps off our courts on a regular basis. We have bought a Hose Reeler to assist him in this process, but he is finding it difficult to put the large heavy hose back on the Reeler. If you come to the courts and find the hose laying on the courts, please don’t complain about it, but if you are able, please replace the hose on the reeler and place the equipment outside the courts. We are going to provide John with a few gifts to thank him for all the volunteer work he does for us.

We will continue to limit the number of entrants to the R/R events to 27. Any higher number makes the wait times between games too long and extends the time slots for the events too far into the next R/R. The system is not perfect, but is what works best with the 6 courts we have.

Using the Courts at Montessa is not an option as their Owners Group will not allow us to play there.

We have asked the CV/SV management to provide us with more courts, but have no commitment from them at this time.

Thank you all for attending.
